As of January 2010, SUP Cleanup has done 11 cleanups in the areas surrounding Wilmington, NC. Not only have standup paddle boarders participated, but kayakers have come out as well. Coffee and pastries from the local Starbucks have fueled the morning start. Usually lasting around 2 hours, the cleanup crew in Wilmington has needed help getting all the trash and debris they find back to land for disposal so local on-the-water support company, SeaTow, transports the excavated trash.
Beyond scheduling and recruiting for its own cleanups, the Wilmington chapter has been focusing on spreading the SUP Cleanup concept throughout the U.S. and the large, ever-growing network of paddlers in order to increase the organization’s reach and impact.
